Post Operative for Stainless SteelCrown
A stainless steel crown is silver in color and covers the crown (top) of the tooth. If your child experiences discomfort we advise you to give him/her Children’s Advil or Motrin.
Please help your child avoid sticky items such as suckers, gum, tootsie rolls, jolly ranchers, taffy, etc. as these could easily pull the crown off.
Please note that your child’s mouth is numb. Do not let your child play, pull, or tug at their lips, cheeks, or tongue. Also watch them and be sure they do not bite their tongue or lips.
It is normal for the tooth’s gum tissue to bleed and be swollen the day of and the next day. We ask that you help your child brush his/her teeth and gums today and tomorrow. This will help in the healing process.

Post Operative Instructions for Extractions
Please note that your child’s mouth is numb. Do not let your child play, pull, or tug at their lips, cheeks, or tongue. Also watch them and be sure they do not bite their tongue or lips. After the extraction, we have placed a 2x2 gauze to act as a “band-aid’. Please leave the initial 2x2 in for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, take the gauze out and exam. If the extraction site is still bleeding, place another 2x2. Repeat as necessary.
- Please use Children’s Advil or Motrin for discomfort.
- As the extraction site begins to heal, it is important to avoid these things:
- Spitting
- Carbonated beverages
- Drinking through a straw
- Eating things with any type of seed (tomatoes, popcorn, sesame seeds, etc.)
- Chips and other hard foods
- Resume a normal diet after 24-32 hours.
- Brush gently the day of the procedure.
Post Operative Instructions for Resin fillings
Please note that your child’s mouth is numb. Do not let your child play, pull, or tug at their lips, cheeks, or tongue. Also watch them and be sure they do not bite their tongue or lips. The resin filling is as hard as it will be when you leave the office. You should not have any discomfort with this type of filling but if you do use Children’s Advil or Motrin.
Post Operative Instructions for Appliances
You will need to avoid sticky or extremely chewy foods; such as taffy, caramel, or gum. It can pull and/or distort your appliance, making it come loose or breaking it.
If your appliance comes loose, please save the appliance and make an appointment as-soon-as possible.
